Lee Chang-Dong is a South Korean Film Director, Screenwriter, and also Novelist. He belonged to a noble family of the old Korea. He was born in Daegu in South Korea on April 1, 1954. He has a younger brother named Lee Joon-Dong.

He has won a series of awards. He has directed six feature films, “Peppermint Candy” in 2000, “Green Fish” in 1997, “Oasis” in 2002, “Secret Sunshine” in 2007, “Poetry” in 2010, and “Burning” in 2018.

“Burning” made a massive hit. It became the first Korean film to make it to the 91st Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film in the Toronto Film Critics.

Also, in March 2019, Lee won Best Director for ”Burning” and was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 13th Asian Film Award. He has won several awards, which marked his incredible artwork in the industry, though, at the beginning, he did not have any experience in Filmmaking.

He started his journey as a Screenplay Writer in a project known as ” To the Starry Island”. On the first day of his shoot, he was promoted as an Assistant Director (AD).

Lee’s films are melodramatic and filled with utter despair. His movies also contain some political and social intrusions which reflect our society.
Lee Chang-Dong published his first short story in 1987, “Possession”, which was followed by “There’s a Lot of Shit” in 1992, which won him, The Korea Times Literary Prize and the Tenaciousness in 1996. Recently in 2018, his short story, “On Destiny” was published in the journal,  Asymptote.
