Kim Yong-hwa is a film director and screenwriter from South Korea. He majored in Film Studies at Chung-Ang University. His graduation project in 1999 was a short film, ‘In the Jungle.’ This short film won prizes at the 42nd Rochester International Film Festival and the 33rd Houston International Film Festival in 2000. ‘Oh! Brothers’ was his first film as a director. It turned out to be the 6th best-selling Korean film of 2003.

Kim’s third consecutive hit movie ‘Take Off’ (2006), based on a true story of the obstacles faced by the Korean National ski jumping team. Kim then produced ‘Mr Go’ – a film having one of the most enormous budgets in Korean cinema history. It portrays the story of a girl who tries to save her grandfather’s circus after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. The movie was filmed in stereoscopic 3D and by using facial motion capture techniques and a digital fur production program. The film had a team of over 500 animators and CG professionals who spent four years on the production and over a year on the editing.

Apart from these films, he also directed ‘200 Pounds Beauty’ (2006), ‘My Way’ (2011), ‘Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds’ (2017), and ‘Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days’ (2018). He received ‘Best New Director’ for ‘200 Pounds Beauty’ at the 30th Golden Cinematography Awards in 2007 and ‘Best Director’ for ‘Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds’ at the 54th Baeksang Arts Awards in 2018. Kim also received ‘Best Director’ for ‘Take Off’ at many award functions.
