Kim Ho Sun is a well-recognized South Korean film director, producer, and screenwriter. He is known for directing the highest-grossing and most spectacular movies of the 1970-80s. A few of his remarkable work includes Yeong-ja’s ‘Heydays’, ‘Rainbow over Seoul’, ‘Death Song’ and ‘Henequen’.

He was born on 9 March 1941 in South Hamgyong Province, North Korea. He completed his schooling at one of the renowned schools in the country. After that, he dropped out of Kyung Hee University and went into the line of filmmaking. Thereafter, he made his directorial debut with ‘Hwannyeo’ in 1974, which was vastly acknowledged by people. He released his second movie, Yeong-Ja’s ‘Heydays’, in 1975, predominantly a social melodrama that showcased women who get broken and cast away in the mechanism of modernization. It drew the attention of people from all over the world.

Till now, he has given several extraordinary workpieces which includes, ‘The Modern Grandma’(1964), ‘The Pollen of Flowers’(1972), Yeong-ja’s ‘Heydays’(1975), ‘The Sleep Deeper Than Death’(1979), ‘Shorter Three Times’, ‘Longer Three Times’(1981), ‘My Daughter Saved from Den of Evil 2’(1986), ‘Paris Emma’(1988), ‘Rainbow Over Seoul’(1989), ‘The Song of Crazy Love’(1990), ‘When Adam Opens His Eyes(1993) and many others. One of the most significant moments of his journey was the movie ‘Winter Woman’ of 1977, which became the bestselling domestic film of the 1970s, and held that record until ‘General’s Son’ in 1990. This movie attained a tremendous amount of love from his fans across the nation.

His work was greatly admired by critics and won numerous awards as well. He received the titles of Best Film, and Best Director for Shorter Three Times, Longer Three Times at 1981 Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, Best Film and Best Director for Rainbow Over Seoul at 1989 Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, Best Film for Death Song at 1991 Chunsa Film Art Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards, Best Director for Henequen at 1996 Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, Best Film and Best Director for Henequen at 1996 Grand Bell Awards. Since 2007, Kim has served as a senior advisor to the Korea Film Directors’ Society (KFDS).
