He has three siblings, older brother, Bong Joon-soo, who is working as an English professor at the Seoul National University, his older sister, Bong Ji-hee, who teaches fashion styling at Anyang University, and Bong Hyo-Min, who is also a film director.

Despite his interest in filmmaking, he had to enroll himself in Yonsei University and got graduated from there with a degree in sociology. Later, in the 1990s, he finished his two-year program at the Korean Academy of Film Arts. During his time at the academy, he made 16 min short films, and a few of his films were screened at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and Vancouver International Film Festival. He debuted with 2000 dark comedy ‘Barking Dogs Never Bite’ and received awards at the ‘Hong Kong Film Festival’ and the ‘Slamdance Film Festival.’

Then, he continued with his work and released ‘Memories of Murder’ in 2003, and won three awards, his other achievement was the movie ‘Mother,’ which was premiered at the ‘2009 Cannes Film Festival’ and was honored with three awards at the ‘Asian Film Awards.’ His most outstanding achievements which brought limelight to him are, ‘The Host’ (2006) featuring Song Kang-ho, Park Hae-il, Byun Hee-bong, Go Ah-sung and Bae Doona, and this was the huge international success, another one is the dark comedy film ‘Parasite,’ which was given a Palme d’Or at the ‘2019 Cannes Film Festival’, and made Joon-ho the first-ever South-Korean director to receive this credit.

Speaking about his records of the award would give you immense pleasure as this personality has received an Oscar for the movie Gisaengchung (2019), in Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing, and Best Original Screenplay.
