A South Korean personality who has shown excellent work in directing and screenwriting is none other than Lee Kwang Kuk. He is appreciated for his film “A Matter of Interpretation”, released in 2014 which gained massive response from audiences across the country and earned the title of one of the most heartily received Korean films at the Busan International Film Festival in the same year.
He was born in 1975 in South Korea and grew up there. He finished his schooling at one of the prestigious schools in the country. After that, he completed his graduation and got a degree from Seoul Institute of the Arts, South Korea. Later, he desired of pursuing his career in the film industry and began looking out for different opportunities.
He worked as an assistant director under Hong Sang-soo before his feature debut with “Romance Joe” (2011) that made its premiere worldwide and was given Citizen Reviewers’ Award at the 16th Busan International Film Festival in 2011. Not only this but it was also invited to the Vancouver International Film Festival and International Film Festival Rotterdam in 2012. This gave him the spotlight and his work was highly applauded by each person in the industry.
In 2012, he released his second feature film, “Hard to Say” (2012), which entered the Dragons and Tigers section at Vancouver in 2013. Furthermore, Lee worked as a director in “A Tiger in Winter”, “Romance Joe”, “If You Were Me”, and as assistant director in “HaHaHa”, “Like You Know It All”, “Woman on the Beach”, “Tale of Cinema” and as producer and screenwriter for “A Tiger in Winter”, “A Matter of Interpretation”. One of his significant achievements was when his sophomore work i.e. “A Matter of Interpretation” was introduced as one of the greatest Korean films in the Busan International Film Festival that year.
He has been the recipient of a few awards as well like, he received Best New Director for the film “Romance Joe” at 2012 21st Buil Film Awards and Best Screenplay for “Romance Joe” at 2012 13th Busan Film Critics’ Awards.
His journey has been quite remarkable in the industry which provided him distinction from every corner of the world. All this was possible because of his constant endeavors to achieve a name in the country. He has set the benchmark high for all directors out there.
