TV Show Digest

‘Celeb Five: Behind the Curtain’ is a lively little mockumentary that brings together the comedic talents of four women, Kim Shin Young, Song Eun Yi, Shin Bong Sun, and Ahn Young Mi of Celeb Five, and they try to come up with ideas for a new Netflix comedy special.

The Feel-Good Part

The show gives you the impression that you are having fun conversing with your friends, who can talk about almost anything. There are many improvised skits and lots of giggles and laughter for the audience.

The Disappointing Factor

Some of the skits, including some more racy jokes, feel staged and do not quite work. Most of them discussed ideas in groups or over FaceTime, which felt very passive and was not all that entertaining to watch.

In-Depth Analysis

Kim Shin Young, Song Eun Yi, Shin Bong Sun, and Ahm Young Mi combine their talents in the program. For those not familiar with this girl group, Kim Young-hee, who left in late 2018, was the fifth member of Celeb Five. We get an inside look at the preparation for any standup show thanks to Netflix’s Celeb Five: Behind the Curtain. The Celeb Five members try to convince us that their casual get-togethers and conversations are a comedy show in and of themselves. In place of standup shows, it feels more like a reality television program. The tv show demonstrates how comedians develop ideas for the topics they will cover during the performance. The Celeb Five members are standing behind the curtain just before they take the stage in the opening moments. It is ironic because the title of the show suggests it. It has a simple premise and plays on all the tropes of Korean comedy, and Celeb Five lends its talents to the project. Anyone who has seen behind-the-scenes footage from K-dramas or K-pop stars or goofs from those artists will instantly warm to the style presented here, which is full of silly jokes; some people will connect with this material, while others can not understand. They draw inspiration from actual interactions and the unusual traits of Asian uncles and aunts for their content.

Star Power

Kim Shin Young gives great anecdotes, especially about her countryside grandmother and her thug life. Her friendship with Ahn Young-mi is impeccable while highlighting the differences between Netflix’s explicit subject and Korean domestic content. Any simple exchange with her can serve as material for a joke. The black humor and funeral jokes of Shin Bong Sun are based on her real-life interactions and will tickle your sensitive bones. Most of the time, Eun Yi worries that they would not have enough material or that it would not be funny for foreigners. But her sly observations about relatively unnoticed things are just as hilarious as Ahn Young Mi’s provocative gestures.

Overall Opinion

Those who have been fans of Celeb Five since they first appeared in the 1980s will adore the ideas the girls come up with and savor their banter throughout the show. This show will probably be most enjoyable to those familiar with the culture and aware of the Celeb Five. There are some good laughs in here, though. Do give it a try!
