Drama Digest

Something bizarre enters people’s minds, leading them to develop a strange disease that modern medicine cannot cure. The illness, given the moniker “mystery disease”, is a disease no one has any clue or prior experience regarding. An eccentric doctor, Ramune, who is foul-mouthed and is the exact opposite of the mental image that forms when someone thinks of the word “doctor”, tries to take on this mysterious ailment with the help of his apprentice. Watch this series to find out more about Dr Ramune and his antics.

The Feel-Good Part

This anime uses overarching themes of bizarre supernaturalism that bank on its unexpected nature to draw viewers. The manifestation of problems of the mind and heart into diseases that outwardly materialize into absurd food-oriented symptoms is unique and instantly intrigues the viewer. Several jokes eke laughter out of you, and the art style is excellent. The music is catchy and Yuuma Uchida’s peppy “SHAKE!SHAKE!SHAKE!” is worth listening to, and Saji’s ED is the perfect closing song and fits the entire mood perfectly.

The Disappointing Factor

The anime tries to be philosophical and impress profound conclusions upon the viewers, but it fails, much to our disappointment. The plotlines often lead to superficial endings and the level of reflection needed is absent. The anime also relies on an excessive number of clichéd overused tropes that make it feel tedious and generic after a point of time. The doctor and his assistant’s camaraderie gets stale after a while, and the gags do not out draw out as many laughs as the creators would have liked to There is also the fundamental problem where the patients’ diseases are so apparent that there is no space left for psychoanalysis and their personalities seem highly wooden.

In-Depth Analysis

This anime is intriguing in some aspects, and the chaos and absurdity make it enjoyable. There are a few heartwarming moments that make the viewers emotional as well. The episodic stint of having different diseases also keeps the viewers hooked. The contrasting personalities of Dr Ramune and his assistant add dimension to the show, and it is surprising how well they can mesh together. The credit goes to the writers for balancing their dynamic so intricately. However, the same dynamic gets overbearing after a while because their camaraderie seems to be going around in cyclical ways.

There are a lot of flaws that somehow outweigh the good. Almost every appreciable segment has a downside. There is evident lazy screenwriting because this anime has so much room for developing and exploring the patients’ personalities but nothing is done about it. This anime had high prospects, but because of deficiencies in the writers’ parts, it did not quite stand up to people’s expectations from it.

Star Power

Yuuma Uchida voices Ramune, and his presence alleviates the character hugely.

Overall Opinion

If you have time in your hands and want to watch something with psychological themes but do not want it to be too heavy, this one should be on your watchlist.
