Movie Digest

Fearsome based on the true story of the frightening incident that happened to a band as they made their way to Chuncheon.

The Feel-Good Part

Since the film based on actual events, there was a lot of curiosity surrounding this project, which immediately drew crowds. The atmosphere created is exceptionally ominous, which serves as a great backdrop to set the story. The creative choices build curiosity and tension between the characters, making the audience uneasy, making it perfect for a story like this.

The Disappointing Factor

The film lacks direction and meanders all over the place. The treatment of the movie feels out dated because of the visual effects and the narrative structure. The plot also feels pointless despite being based on a true story, but there is, no concrete evidence to prove this, it is just one reporter believing a man’s story. The incident is no doubt, extremely horrifying, but that doesn’t seem to translate on-screen even during the supposedly scary moments due to the lack lustre execution. The movie feels like it was made by an amateur as the editing is choppy and lacks all forms of flow in terms of the movement of the story. The camerawork is often disorienting in a way that makes it hard to finish the movie without getting a headache. It’s a film that relies heavily on building tension without attempting to give an appropriate and timely release. This may cause the audience feel baited.

In-Depth Analysis

This is an exciting plot to explore if it is done in a way that’s new and savvy to avoid genre traps. It is, however, nothing new as a story. Since haunted houses have been the foundation for horror flicks, its treatment is what separates them and gives each movie a chance to shine. It does absolutely nothing like a film to even go toe-to-toe with films like The Blair Witch Project or Conjuring. The horror elements do not evoke any reaction from viewers. The most it does, it maybe creates a feeling of uneasiness, which quickly fades away as it uses cheap tricks to pull the audience.

Star Power

The actors have tried to work with whatever the plot demanded of them, which was evidently, very little. The performances might have been the only thing working for the film. Cha Seon-Woo, known for his role in Reply 1994, plays the cautious yet fearful character with nuance. Actress Lim Young-Joo is charming in her role of Jun-Hee, who has a playful vibe and radiates positive energy that holds the band members together. Jo Dong-Hyuk has also impressed the audience by playing Seung-Yoon. The actors are highly skilled as they have managed to give some flavor to this otherwise bland and substandard film.

Overall Opinion

This movie is not worth watching. It is boring and feels longer than it is. It has very little substance that goes beyond atmosphere building. The film was an extremely disappointing watch, especially when the cast was talented. Even for a laugh, this is not worth your time.
