Movie Digest

Saku Urushibara is a young man with unique abilities to comprehend the sounds of nature. He can also listen to sounds from the shapes and colors of things. His father is a composer, and his brother is a music composer. Saku Urushibara has an inferiority mesh due to the success achieved by his father and brother. He tries to avoid music. But he applies to the University of Arts in Kyoto. And he ends up infiltrating the world of contemporary classical music.

The Feel-Good Part

The dialogue-delivery and acting convince the spirit of the art world in a simple and straightforward way. There is no glossing over how male superiors can unfairly use their powers to the  advantage of female students. The story is heart-warming.

The Disappointing Factor

According to my taste, the movie doesn’t feel disappointing. Everything is perfectly set as per the storyline.

In-Depth Analysis

Musicophilia is given a chance to evaluate the serpentine protection that society gives to men for the sake of their so-called genius. Precisely at the outlay of women. Saku Urushibara is introduced as an art student in Kyoto. Saku cannot escape from the world of music even if he wants to due to some unique ability. He is drawn to music by his newfound friend, members of the music club who has pulled him to their eccentric and passionate search for generation-defining piece. Both the brothers resemble their father in more than one way. Both the brothers had a strong bond when they were young. Skau never got a chance to explore musical genes from his father. As the story is in Kyoto, the setting is a crucial part of the film. The close-up shots of Taniguchi and how they created music have given more direction by interruption of frames. The editing provides viewers right inside Saku’s experience, and enables us to know what how’s in his head.

Star Power

The cast did justice with the beauty of studying, doing and deconstructing music. Kai Inowaki portrayed Saku with enough vulnerability. Ikusaburo Yamazaki was supercilious as the character of Taisei demanded. All the performances were consistent. The performances of all the actors were delightful.

Overall Opinion

Music is explored in many ways in this film. The movie is endowed with another layer of depth. It is made more memorable by the inner demons conjured by family melodrama.
