Movie Digest

Fang is a lonely young guide who has lost his zest for life. On his birthday, he meets a mysterious girl by chance. It soon becomes clear that she is also celebrating her birthday that day, and they decide to spend it together. However, they had no contact after the party. Fang misses her terribly. On his birthday a year later, Fang received a robot named “Chu Yi.” The robot has the same face as the mysterious girl who has vanished. After a few days of getting along, Fang develops feelings for the robot.

The Feel-Good Part

The film has a more relaxed approach to the subject matter than the original. The strong performances by the leads make the film fun.

The Disappointing Factor

Since the film followed the original movie every bit, there was not anything new or exciting the film offered.

In-Depth Analysis

The film Yes, I Do! is a remake of the Japanese movie Cyborg She from 2008. The film barely deviates from the original and, in some ways, improves on it. The film shows no signs of multiple creative hands and moves along smoothly, thanks to Zhang Wenting’s usual smooth editing. The scriptwriter does not make any main changes to the overall structure and closely follows the original film. They replaced some sequences with content more appropriate for the Mainland market. There are occasional bursts of visual effects that are adequate but are not spectacular. The central relationship and the actors’ chemistry ultimately determine whether the story succeeds or fails. The lack of genuine emotion between the two leads is the fault of the script and the central concept.

Star Power

Bao Bei Er (Fang Yuan) did a great job being a goofy nerd and making the film comedic. Xin Zhi Lei as Chu Yi embodies the role of a robot very well. You can see more personality from Chu Yi within the expressionless confines.

Overall Opinion

It is a fun romance and comedy movie with a hint of sci-fi. It is perfect for a mindless time pass.
