Movie Digest

Luo Zhi is a studious, proud, and lonely girl who secretly fell in love with Sheng Huai Nan, a childhood friend who doesn’t seem to remember her for a long time. After graduating from high school Luo Zhi decides to forget her first crush and move on, but fates play with her heart again as Sheng Huai Nan also attends the same college university. They meet unexpectedly and get closer every day, but Luo Zhi does not dare to confess her unrequited feelings to anyone. The growing friendship between the two puts pressure on their budding relationship. When reality came knocking at the door, Luo Zhi needed to decide if she would act on her feelings or loses her love forever.

The Feel-Good Part

The movie provides a view on unrequited love, first crush, youthful ambitions, and long-term friendships. The film consists of an innocent love story of an introvert and troubled girl who only wants to confine her feelings in her diary, which makes it relatable for female audiences. The movie is full of delicate characters that empathize with strong plotlines and quality performances by the entire cast. Even though the character textures and narrative center are unstable, it manages to convey the story to its audience heart-warmingly. Some emotional moments captivate the audience and showcase undying love, pain, and regret spot-on. Zhang Xue Ying gives a brilliant performance with a personal touch of charm that elevates her more than others. The production values and directorial aspects have reached their peak that are rich enough for the viewer’s delightful experience.

The Disappointing Factor

As the film version takes some liberties rather than following the original material, it misses some of the base plots that connect the entire storyline. The lack of depth and meaning behind some of the actions make the movie seem insensible. Even though there are new technical details included effectivity overall lost. Sheng Huai Nan seems two directional with the actor performing stiff acting and the lack of his story arcs. Some unconvincing and unbelievable plotlines might affect the audiences as they are confusing and unmemorable. The flashback scene also had less impact and felt uninteresting.

In-Depth Analysis

A girl who grows up stubborn and faces hardship without putting her armor down for the first time falls in love. Even though she has a flawed and quiet nature, she unexpectedly opens her heart to her childhood friend, who has forgotten about her. As they meet again in college and gets closer, she is afraid to show her true feelings and wishes him to like her back. The movie also portrays psychological aspects with abuse and depression at its core. The film focuses more on a shy girl finding an unrequited love and less on their budding romance as she prioritizes small encounters, small precautions, and small conversations with her first love.

Overall Opinion

It is a decent pick for an audience interested in romance genres with the first love trope that makes the audience reminiscent of their young days. Highly addictive even though it misses a few marks will transitioning a spectacular original novel.
