Movie Digest

Following a sequence of occurrences, two lonely and disillusioned people, one a neglected street gangster and the other an alienated transfer student, become each other’s, sole companions. However, life throws a fresh set of obstacles their way, and as the summer ends, so does their friendship. An unlikely friendship, a tale from a forgotten summer – this movie brings to you a refreshing take on life that will make you smile.

The Feel-Good Part

Obviously, the best part about this movie is the friendship between Huang Simao (the gangster) and Yi Shuisheng (the young boy). It was just such an endearing connection and the actors portrayed their characters so well. Both of them struggle as outcasts yet they find solace in each other’s companionship. There is a warmth you can feel through their onscreen chemistry. There are so many funny moments in the film that make you laugh out loud. But, there are also moments that make you introspect and think deeply about your own choices in life. Although the movie has its share of serious themes like crime and bullying, the overall vibe of the movie is lighthearted making it extremely enjoyable.

The Disappointing Factor

This movie is a rare gem to find in a field filled with over-dramatic movies. Yet, there are still shortcomings to find. There are certain incomplete moments in the movie. There are questions like “Why was he ostracized?”, “How exactly did their friendship begin?” or “What happens after the end?” All these unanswered questions are left hanging in the air. There should have been a little more focus on the backstories of the main characters. Yet, in the end, all of these details do not matter because of how charming the movie is.

In-Depth Analysis

However, the film not only makes us laugh, but it also has a heart. The picture contains some really sad and emotional aspects, which Han Yi (Director) handles expertly. He makes us think and occasionally wakes us up, but he never takes us away from the fun we’re having with the story. There’s a lot more to the film than I anticipated. It has layers and works on many different levels. Anything genuinely humorous in a film is becoming increasingly rare these days. The movement scenes were sharp, straight, and rapid, and all of the actors handled them well.

Star Power

Newcomer Kexuan Guo shines as Yi Shuisheng, the new boy with a heart of gold outcasted by his peers. He portrays his character so well. His innocence is his charm and it shines throughout the film. His counterpart is Chuang Chen as Huang Simao. Chuang is already a veteran in the film circuit with movies like “Heavenly Sword and Dragon Slaying Sabre” and “My Best Sidekick” being some of his most notable ones. He has mostly played supporting roles and this is his first time as the lead, yet he has pulled off his role so well! He brings so much depth and passion to his character. You follow him with keen eyes, always wanting to know what he does next.

Overall Opinion

“Like a Friend” is a wonderful coming-of-age film that brings you so much joy and bliss. This movie does not put judgment on its characters, instead, it is an experience that brings you along on their journey. Even after the movie ends you find yourself wanting more. It is a must-watch if you are looking for something light-hearted and charming.
