The drama special broadcasted by KBS brings a wide range of actors, directors, and writers together for its eleventh season. This time around, it carries the same great stories told by some of the best up-and-coming professionals in the industry. This episode is something special. One Night follows a group of civil exam takers named Lee Dong Shik, Jo Joo Young, and Nam Gi Joon. The three try to pay for an overnight with a bag of 100 million dollars due to a delivery accident. What happens next is a bunch of unfortunate events that will leave you at the edge of your seat throughout their endeavors and questioning all their dumb decisions from start to finish. How did they get the 100 million dollars? What was the accident that led them to have the 100 million dollars? And what will our band of civil exam test-takers do next? Watch this dark comedy special and find out.

The Feel-Good Part

The show is hilarious from start to finish. Whether it’s how lines are delivered or the several moments of slapstick and physical humor, you can always rely on this special to give you some quick laughs. This show also does a great job at casting, as every single person cast in this show does a great job with whatever they are given. Perhaps the show so funny is its excellent writing by writer Lim Ji-Eun. The story is a compelling one and gives rise to some great moments throughout the special. With a suspenseful mystery and the actors running around just waiting to be set up for funny jokes and moments, you surely have a great time with this special.

The Disappointing Factor

While the show’s humor comes from the characters doing dumb things, the characters’ choices are frustrating to the point where you feel like yelling at the screen. A lot of the problems that they get into can be easily avoided if they just made better choices. Comedy is a very subjective thing, and some people might not find the special to be very funny or engaging. There are moments of dark humor that are not appropriate for a lot of people and some people might take offense to it. The story is a bit too simplistic and could do better with a larger overarching storyline and a few more episodes. A dark comedy like this deserves a lot more than one episode.

In-Depth Analysis

Drama specials are an excellent platform for up-and-coming directors and writers and for already-established directors and writers to experiment and try a new style. The movie is an excellent look at money in the wrong hands and the consequences of coming into contact with sudden riches. Lee Hoo and Lim Ji-Eun are relatively new to the director and writer world so it’s exciting to see what they do next.

Star Power

Aside from KBS being a great platform, it also broadcasts a wide range of beloved shows such as Immortal Songs, Music Bank, and Descendants of the Sun. Kim Sung Cheol, Kim Mi Soo, and Jang Sung Bum play the lead. Kim Sung Cheol plays Lee Dong Shik, Kim Mi Soo plays Jo Joo Young, and Jang Sung Bum plays Nam Gi Joon. All three give outstanding performances and add to the film’s comedy with their impeccable comedic delivery. Kim Sung Cheol starred in dramas and movies such as Prison Playbook, The Wind Blows, Arthdal Chronicles Part 2: The Sky Turning Inside Out, Rising Land, The Battle of Jangsari, Anarchist from Colony, and Too Hot to Die. Kim Mi Soo starred in Hi Bye, Mama!, Into the Ring, The School Nurse Files, and Memories. Jang Sung Bum starred in several dramas and movies, such as You’re All Surrounded, Healer, The Producers, Sunkist Family, Default, On Your Wedding Day, and Hwayi: A Monster Boy. The show uses all its characters to the best of its abilities to add some great moments to the show. These characters include Hwang Geum Song, played by Jo Hee Bong, Dong Shik’s mother, played by Baek Hyun Joo, and the detective leader, played by Gu Bon Jin.
