Drama Digest

‘The lover’s lie’ is the third of the Liar series, the other two being ‘The wife’s lies’ (2015) and ‘The lover’s lies’ (2016). This drama spins around a misunderstanding that goes back to two close friends, Shu Fei and Lin Fei’s college days. Shu Fei had a major crush on Qi Ran, and she would do almost everything to keep him happy as much as she could. But to her disappointment, Qi Ran liked Lin Fei, who didn’t reciprocate his feelings. Seeing Qi Ran heartbroken and grief-stricken, Shu Fei took a momentous step. She started writing letters under Lin Fei’s name to Qi Ran. Later, after their graduation, Shu Fei and Lin Fei find a job in a television shopping firm. Shu Fei encounters Director Lan Tian and misunderstands him as a pervert. She also meets Qi Ran, who is their boss. Faced with the hard truth of Qi Ran’s still existing feelings for Lin Fei, Shu Fei tries to suppress her sentiments by focusing more on her work. This gets her closer to Lan Tian as time passes. Meanwhile, Lin Fei gets to know about the letters from Shu Fei and she decides to take the privilege of that. Hence, she too focuses on her work to do anything that will get her close to Qi Ran.

The Feel-Good Part

The slow rupture of sweet moments withholds the drama all along. Close encounters, overwhelmed emotions and lots of toe-curling moments make it worthy of watching and re-watching. The shift from an unrequited to new love, through Shu Fei, aspires to catch all those stages of moving on.

The Disappointing Factor

Once again, the stereotypical relationship governing boss and employee goes along with the mainstream Chinese drama.

In-Depth Analysis

The kernel of the drama lies in the lie that gives voice to the character’s feelings differently. It strategically shapes the story and pulls it into a couple’s love story. Shu Fei’s lie of writing those letters in the name of Lin Fei just to soothe Qi Ran expresses her feelings. Thus, setting the stage for the viewer to sympathize with the protagonist. Later, using this unrequited love trope she’s shown struggling with her incomplete emotions. It is doubled with layers of sorrow as Qi Ran pays more attention to Lin Fei. Whereas if it was not for Shu Fei, he won’t be acting like that. As Qi Ran dwells under this veil, which is taken advantage of by Lin Fei, the idea that Shu Fei deserves more is established. This is where Lan Tian enters. His growing feelings for Shu Fei also develop by witnessing her actions towards suppressing her emotions toward Qi Ran.

Star Power

Jia Qing landed her role perfectly, as she did in all of her earlier characters in the series. Jung Il Woo’s performance was in splendid sync with the drama. George Hu and Zhao Yuan Yuan’s acting skills beautifully unfold the couple’s story. The supporting casts also did excellent work in living up to their roles.

Overall Opinion

The drama would not disappoint in showing all those overwhelming heart-itching moments. Moreover, the cuteness factor forming the base of the drama is bound to keep one glued till the end.
