Ayumi Hamasaki is a Japanese movie actress, singer, songwriter, model, entrepreneur, and much more. She has got several titles to add to her crown. Hamasaki was born in Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan. She was born on October 2,1978. She is also known by the nickname Ayu.
Hamasaki’s father left her when she was of three years. At the age of seven, she started modeling to support her family. At the age of fourteen, her family moved to Tokyo to make up her career in singing and acting. She got minor roles in movies and TV shows. She was not so fond of acting. She was too small and so was considered not to have a great future in modeling too. She also dropped out of high school. She used to spend her time shopping and partying.
At a karaoke club party, she was forced to sing a song. The producer of a major record label too was present there. He offered her a contract and insisted that she should learn music. Later she was sent to New York for further training. She stayed there for three months. From New York she used to write letters to the producer. Interested in her way of writing, he asked her to write down her thoughts as songs.
In 1998, she released her debut single “Poker Face” and debut major-label album “ A Song For XX” under the guidance of Avex CEO Max Matsuura. The album topped the Oricon charts and sold more than a million copies.
More than four million copies of her album “A Best” got sold in Japan and it is considered as her best album. Ayumi is known as the Empress of J-Pop due to her popularity, in Japan and all over Asia. Ayumi was also the highest- earning entertainer in Japan as of 2002. She married twice and later got divorced and also she is a mother of two.
She has won MTV Asia’s Best Female Artist Award in 2002. She is also the first artist who had four singles on Japan’s top 10 charts simultaneously. She has sold over 45 million records worldwide since her debut in 1998. The highly talented artist is capable of writing with both hands.
