Mashing people laugh, and making them laugh wholeheartedly by telling jokes is a skill not many have acquired. So here is a list of 10 Thai comedians who are worth the praise that surrounds their names.

1. Mum Jokmok 

Petchtai Wongkamlao, better known by his stage name Mum Jokmok is a comedian, actor, and film director. He is also a popular television personality. Mum Jokmok began working as a comedian in restaurants with live music and comedy performance (Bangkok ‘cafe’ scene). Mum Jokmok began his comedy troupe with the actor and director Jaturong Mokjok, famously known for “Kung Fu Tootsie” and “Rak 555”. He achieved new heights of popularity after appearing on the variety-game show “Ching Roi Ching Lan”. Mum had appeared in the comedy section of the show and performed various stunts with his teammates. Mum Jokmok also had his own TV show named “Mum Show”, which aired from 2005 all the way to 2009.

 

2. Kom Chauncheun

Akom Preedakul, famously known as Kom Chauncheun, was a comedian and actor. He was most popularly known for his supporting and comedic roles in Thai movies and television dramas. Kom had begun his career as a nightclub comedian and finally attain a major breakthrough in his career in 2002 when he starred in the film “Heavens Seven”. His remarkable ability to understand and improvise on scripts granted him some outstanding opportunities to work with a broad spectrum of directors like Rergchai Poungpetch, Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit, and Poj Arnon. Kom Chauenchen passed away in 2021 after being diagnosed and hospitalised due to Covid-19. Until the time of his death, Kom had made himself stand out as one of the most respected Thai comedians.

 

3. Sayan Doksadao 

Sayan Doksadao Muangcharoen was a widely acclaimed and popular Thai comedian. He worked in various TV shows and movies and was famously known for being adopted by Deux Doksadao. Duex is one of the most famous and most celebrated comedians in Thailand. Sayan belongs to the group of limited comedians and actors who worked despite having Down’s Syndrome. He passed at the Chulalongkorn Hospital in 2008. He was initially hospitalised due to a severe brain haemorrhage which left him in a critical situation that required him to be put on life support.

 

4. Theng Thredtherng

Pongsak Pongsuwan, more commonly known as Theng Thredtherng, his stage name, is a renowned Thai actor and comedian. In 2007, Theng was awarded the Best Comedy Actor at the Asian Television Awards for his talented and outstanding performances. He was initially a viral sensation in nightclubs in Thailand and on television shows. Theng debuted in the 2001 action-comedy feature film, “Killer Tattoo”.

 

5. Udom Taepanich 

Udom Taepanich is a stand-up comedian, writer, and artist. In 2000, the Nation Publishing Group named Udom as One Of The Best Persons of the Century in Performing Arts. Udom is also popularly known as Diew 1-11 (Stand Up Comedy) throughout Thailand. In 1993, he kick-started his career as a member of the Yutthakarn Kayubnguek Team. Udom then went on to start his own stand-up comedy series titled “Diew”. As of August 2017, his live show at eleven parts of the original series.

 

6. Sudarat Butrprom 

Sudarat Butrprom is an actress, TV host, and comedienne, widely known as the ‘Queen of Comedy’ for her hilarious TV comedy appearances. In 2010, Sudarat was crowned as the Female Comedian of the Year. She began working as a comedian in 2005 as a sidekick with Sam Cha Gang, along with Mum Jokmok, Chusak Iamsuk, and Pongsak Pongsuwan. The Thai romantic comedy film “First Love” and Sudarat’s role as ‘Teacher Inn’ is probably her most famous work to date.

 

7. Seenoom Chernyim

Bootham Huadkrathok was an actor and comedian. He began his journey in the showbiz under the stage name Sinoom Phitsanulok and teamed up with Den Dokpradoo, Thep Pho-Ngam, and Der Doksadao. Later on in his career, he changed his stage name to Seenoom Chernyim. Seenoom collapsed after suffering from a brain hemorrhage during the shooting of the popular sitcom “Bang Rak Soi 9” back in 2008. He went under severe treatment after this incident and finally passed on in 2015 due to a case of cerebrovascular disease.

 

8. Ped Chernyim

Thanya Phowichit, famously known by his stage name, Ped Chernyim, is a comedian. He is best known for being the co-founder of the famous comedian-bound group, Chern-yim. Thanya was also once the vice-manager of BEC-TERO. Thanya did not limit himself to the showbiz and also served as the football manager for the Thailand Women’s National Under 19 Football Team, and Trang F.C.

 

9. Sena Hoi

Kiattisak Udomnak, also known as Sena Hoi, is a popularly known singer, actor, and comedian. He was born in 1969 and was nicknamed ‘Boy’. Sena Hoi is known for his work in “Thep Thisa Pa Congreed”, “Wai Nee Mai Mee Break”, and “Sarawat Maeluk-on”. Sena’s first work in the showbiz is said to be “K-Hat Dao”.

 

10. Paitoon Purmat 

Paitoon Purmat was a widely known and acclaimed Thai-American comedian and actor. When he was a young child, his parents had moved to the US, leaving him and his younger sister to live with their grandmother. Paitoon’s early life was quite dark. He did not receive proper education and even ended up experimenting with drugs. But even then, Paitoon had managed to pull himself out of those situations and established himself as a respected man in the Thai entertainment industry.
