Korean Dramas were famous for their unexpected twists and turns in a story. There were several instances when Korean Netizens didn’t like those twists. There are times when Netizens take some bold and unexpected steps to cancel a drama. The reason can be the inclusion of Chinese products, distortion of South Korean History, or the representation of inaccuracy of history. Last year’s highly anticipated k- drama Snowdrop received severe criticism because of its historical facts, but JTBC saved the drama. However, not every drama gets luck like Snowdrop. Here’s the list of the Top 10 Korean dramas canceled, shortened, and boycotted by Korean netizens.
1. Joseon Excorcist
The historical drama Joseon Excoricist got officially canceled in March 2021 after airing the first two episodes. SBS tried to save the drama by claiming they would edit the controversial scenes, but about 184,000 people had already signed the petition to cancel the drama. The drama was canceled primarily because of historical inaccuracy and the inclusion of Chinese product products.
2. Wolf
Wolf premiered in 2006 but got canceled only after airing the first three episodes. The long wait resulted in losing interest on the netizen’s side. The unfortunate accidents continue to occur, which result in a delay. The production team also got stressed and worried about several postponements. Even the main lead, Eric Mun, got injured, which resulted in more delays.
3. Backstreet Rookie
Backstreet Rookie received significant backlash from the Netizens. It showed the relationship between a high school student and a middle-aged man. The Kiss scene in the first episode received many criticisms, and parents were concerned about the show broadcasting in the family time slot. The drama alone received more than 6133 complaints from Netizens.
4. Mr. Queen
Mr.Queen started receiving significant backlash after it got aired. Korean natives found that the author had some nasty comments about Korea. The drama is suspected of distorting history by using historical names. It has been speculated that the drama did some inclusion of Chinese products. Eventually, tVN had to remove Mr.Queen from every possible streaming site.
5. My Mister
The 2018 Baeksang Best Drama ‘My Mister’ also received backlash from Korean Netizens. The sensitive scenes, such as physical violence and the age difference between the leads, created a havoc of controversies. The age difference between Lee Kyun Sun and Iu became a controversial topic. The parents were worried about the violence inflicted on the 20-year-old Lee Ji Ah in the drama.
6. Goblin
Goblin, one of the famous international and domestic series, had received criticisms from the netizens. The matter of concern was the age difference between the main leads, Gong Yoo and Kim Go Eun. The drama was also criticized for the product placement and religious beliefs of the people. Still, the drama was bound to be successful.
7. The World Of The Married
The JTBC hit family drama The World of Marriage received many complaints and mixed reviews despite its popularity. The drama was popular across Asia, but the domestic viewers were concerned about the drama’s extreme and transparent representation of inner family matters. The exotic scenes and the hard lines delivered by the actors were a matter of concern for the domestic audience.
8. The King
Eternal Monarch Lee Min Ho’s comeback drama ‘The King: Eternal Monarch’ also received criticism. The critics thought that they were many prejudice and stereotypes in the show. The drama received more than one thousand complaints. The domestic audience was highly concerned and faced discomfort while watching some prejudiced scenes, as stated by them.
9. Snowdrop
The highly anticipated drama ‘Snowdrop’ started receiving criticism and backlash from the domestic audience even before it started filming. The domestic audience and experts believed that the drama intended to distort History and mock the victims that survived some of the difficult times of History. The drama was highly accelerated also because of the star-studded cast, including Jisoo from Blackpink and Jung Hae In.
10. Penthouse
The highly eccentric K-drama labeled by K-drama watchers Penthouse also received backlash from the domestic audience. The audience was concerned with the sensitive scenes such as physical violence against the women, bullying, petrifying scenes, and unreasonable plot provoked viewers to file more than 200 complaints. They asked to fix the concerned issue.
