Article: Ten K-Dramas That Would Be Better Without Romance

Not all dramas need a love story. Just because the leads have good chemistry does not mean that they have to end up as a couple towards the end of the show. When this is done, the love story feels forced, and there is no scope for development in the relationship. Here are some dramas where the romance element does not work really well.

1. Reborn Rich

This drama had a complicated storyline and fans never expected a love story between the leads. Initially, their story had a good start but over time it was definite that they wouldn’t get a proper closure. It would be great if they were shown as two people who just cross paths due to their goals.

2. K2

Love stories between bodyguards and the person they are protecting is not new. But this famous storyline was not used correctly in ‘K2.’ Both the leads shared troubled pasts and the kind of dependency they had was natural. But, these two falling for each other seemed circumstantial rather than love or affection.

3. Prison Playbook

There are two main couples in the drama. The love stories were necessary to showcase how the two leads lived outside the prison. But this was not executed properly. Many felt that the romance in the drama added nothing to the main plot.

4. Search WWW

The main couple’s story in this drama is cute but we don’t know how well that adds to the plot. Both of them met accidentally and shared common interests. Seeing how this was not the main focus of the show, the couple could have been drinking or dinner partners with some ambiguity around their romantic relationship.

5. Vincenzo

The leads in this drama undoubtedly had the best chemistry. But it would have been so much better if they ended up as colleagues making fun of each other and solving cases together. Considering the story this wasn’t a possible ending but neither was the rushed love story.

6. The Glory

This couple perfectly shows how two broken souls can heal each other. This is the reason viewers get the question whether what they had between them was love or sympathy. Since both of them lived their lives for revenge, they had to have some alone time after it was achieved.

7. Itaewon Class

The presence of romance is not really an issue here but there wasn’t enough character development in terms of romance. The leads working together with their other mates would have given a nice end to the story. They could have just shown that they are in the process of exploring their feelings for each other.

8. Memories of Alhambra

The drama’s plot was quite confusing which could have made viewers feel that the love story was an unnecessary extra plot. Also, the descriptions of the leads before the drama started carried a lot of mystery and many expected that to be shown throughout the show. Hence the romance part was quite surprising.

9. My Name

The cast and crew of this drama have revealed that the romance was included just to show the humane side of the female lead. But given the tragic ending of this couple, fans feel that it wouldn’t have mattered if they did not love each other. In that case, many hope the ending could have been different too.

10. Backstreet Rookie

This show’s romance line was criticised by many for the age gap between the lead characters. But that wasn’t the problem as they were adults when they started liking each other. Their characters just didn’t know what to expect from a relationship and they should have stayed single until they discovered that.
