KBS airs a variety of dramas not only in terms of genres but also episodes. There are primetime dramas, weekend dramas and daily soaps. With such a wide range of shows and a lot of veteran actors working on these, the final choice for an award can get complicated. Here is a list of Daesang winners from KBS.
1. Joo Sang Wook
2022’s Daesang went to Joo Sang Wook. He starred in the ‘sageuk’ drama ‘The King of Tears, Lee Bang Won.’ Despite all the controversy surrounding the show, the actor’s efforts in playing a king who worked hard to establish the ‘Empire of Joseon’ was recognised.
2. Ji Hyun Woo
Ji Hyun Woo won the Daesang for the 52-episode weekend drama, ‘Young Lady and Gentleman.’ He starred as the chairman of a successful conglomerate who is a widower with three children. The rest of the show is about how he falls in love with his kids’ tutor.
3. Lee Seung Gi
Lee Seung Gi shared the Daesang of 2022 with actor Joo Sang Wook. After a series of action shows, he starred in the rom-com ‘The Law Café,’ and this earned him the Daesang. In the show, he played a building owner who quit being a prosecutor due to an incident.
4. Chun Ho Jin
In the last decade, veteran actor Chun Ho Jin has won two Daesangs. He received it for the show ‘Once Again’ in 2020 and for ‘My Golden Life’ in 2017. Both the weekend dramas received immense popularity and his role as a father was appreciated.
5. Gong Hyo Jin
‘When the Camellia Blooms’ was one of the best shows of 2019 and its lead actor Gong Hyo Jin won the Daesang for that year. In the show, she played a single mother who works hard to give a good life to her son despite the discrimination she faces.
6. Kim Myung Min
Kim Myung Min won the Daesang for the fantasy comedy-drama ‘The Miracle We Met.’ He played a man who after his sudden death wakes up in the body of another man with the same name and of the same age. This causes him to take care of two families with different backgrounds.
7. Kim Soo Hyun
Starring with many senior actors, Kim Soo Hyun’s performance in the show ‘The Producers’ got him a Daesang. He starred as a rookie producer working for a very busy team who gets entangled in a love triangle and falls in love with a celebrity.
8. Kim Yeong Cheol
Veteran actor Kim Yeong Cheol shared 2017’s Daesang with actor Chun Ho Jin. He received the award for his show ‘My Father is Strange.’ In this weekend drama, he played the titular character, a man whose life changes when a famous actor claims to be his son.
9. Song Hye Kyo
‘Descendants of the Sun’ is definitely at the top in the list of Korean shows that got international recognition. The drama’s lead actor, Song Hye Kyo, played a doctor who is transferred to work as a medical volunteer in a place that lacks basic facilities and falls in love with a soldier. She shared the award with her co-star, Song Joong Ki.
10. Song Joong Ki
Song Joong Ki’s performance as a soldier in ‘Descendants of the Sun’ got him fans worldwide. He starred as a soldier who has to track an issue on arms smuggling and at the same time protect the woman he loves. He shared the award with his co-star, Song Hye Kyo.
