An American firebombing during World War II separates the brother-sister, Seita, and Setsuko, from their parents. This animated story follows Seita, a teenager, as he looks after his younger sister Setsuko, surviving painfully and fighting the odds to remain united. It is an adaptation of a true event that Japanese author Akiyuki Nosaka wrote about in 1967 as a semi-autobiographical short fiction.
