Nicole Johnson once said that “ films that terrify you today may improve your fear responses tomorrow – and could provide relief from anxiety and stress.” Good horror films should have fear, surprise, suspense, mystery, and spoilers. Chinese horror films are four types, Hong Kong horror films, supernatural horror films, psychological horror films, and horror-thriller films. The first Chinese horror film was “Song at Midnight”, based on the book “The Phantom of the Opera”, and directed by Ma-Xu Weibang in 1937.
1. Malignant (2021)
It is a horror movie directed by James Wan. The story is about two sisters. One is Sydney, who is very optimistic, and the other is Madison, who can see vicious killings happening in real life. All this happens after surviving a strange home invasion, and barbarous relationship with her husband. Madison, Sydney, a detective named Kekoa Shaw, and his partner Regina try to solve this mystery. And they will find the reason behind the mystery.
2. Ghost Leader (2020)
It is a Chinese horror movie directed by Hong Doo-Hyun, and the main lead is Gina Jin. There is a talk that says when an individual experiences a “ghost leads the way” then the person will pass out and lose their awareness. The person who experiences “ghost lead the way” will sooner or later be taken to some horrible places like a cemetery. A similar situation has happened in the life of the main lead, Song Wan Rong, a flight attendant-to-be; for some reason, she lost her memory, and she somehow experiences a ghost leading the way and enters into a cemetery.
3. Abduction (2019)
It is a science fiction horror film directed by Ernie Barbarash. The principal leads are Scott Adkins and Andy On as Quinn and Conner, respectively. The story is about Quinn and Connor, who start a rescue mission to save their loved ones. They were kidnapped by mysterious beings. Then Quinn lost his memories and couldn’t recollect who he was, and where he came from while leaving a park fountain in Vietnam. He walks through the city, assembles the hints of the past, and the mysterious figures hunt him constantly.
4. Junkrat Train (2021)
It is a Chinese action horror movie directed by Zhenzhao Lin with the main casts Xu Benji as Soldier Lao Zhou and Junwen Cheng as Tang Rao. The story happens on a train where the rats attack the passengers. The junior clerk from the Chinese health department, his eldest daughter, and son were traveling on the parade. They met his long-lost second child, and the rats attacked the train. The story is about the survival of the passengers. It is a nice movie with an excellent plot.
5. The Town Of Ghosts (2022)
It is a Chinese horror movie directed by Tao Zhang. The principal leads of this movie, Yan Yang Yi, and Bao Hu Lu, got lost in a weird underworld town, where they could only enter but could not leave. Anyone who tries to leave the city without permission, will die mysteriously. They are trapped in that town and try to survive and escape from the yin yang town. And also, they try to uncover the secret behind the mysterious city. The movie is good enough to keep attractive.
6. Dead And Beautiful (2021)
It is a supernatural and psychologically thrilling horror movie directed by David Verbeek. The film originated in Netherland and Taiwan. But available both in English and Chinese. It is a vampire story. The story is about five rich, and bold friends, who become vampires after a night out. They have an initial excitement and test by drinking blood, checking in the mirror, even attacking a worker from convenience. It is a visually attractive film.
7. Crazy Tsunami (2021)
It is a Chinese adventurous horror movie directed by Zhou Jiu Qin. In Chinatown of Southeast Asia, to everyone’s shock, a sudden tsunami and a strange monster came; Jiang Peng and his daughter Jiang Xiao Hu were trapped there as everyone. The two of them and other residents fight with the odd demon, followed by the tsunami. This movie tells about how they overcame that horrible situation. It is an excellent movie to watch.
8. The Strange House (2015)
The director of this movie is Danny Pang in china. The genre of the film is Horror. The main leads are Jiao Xu as Yezi and Cheung Siu Fai Eddie as Zi-Jun. The story is about the girl Yezi, who sees the late Le-Rong, a friend of Zi, in her dreams. Seeking her help and trying to talk to her when she pretends as Le Rong and visits her grandmother as per Zi’s suggestion because of her resemblance to Le Rong. The story is good enough to keep the viewer’s attention.
9. Crocodile Island (2020)
It is a Chinese adventurous horror film directed by Shixing Xu and Simon Zhao. The principal leads in this film are Gallen Lo as Lin Hao and Liao Yinyue as Yi. Bermuda Triangle of Asia is famous because of the aviation accidents that occur frequently. Lin Hao and his daughter Yi were flying over the devil’s sea, Bermuda Triangle; suddenly, the plane crashed and caused an emergency landing on crocodile island. The story is about the survival of these passengers on the flight from crocodiles and spiders. It is a curiosity-generating film.
10. Escape Of Shark (2021)
It is a Chinese adventurous horror movie directed and written by Hang Zhu. The story is about an enormous shark entering the beach-side hotel where a night party had just ended when an unexpected tsunami takes over them. The film shows how they overcome the situation with the shark. It will generate curiosity in the viewer’s mind as it is a thrilling horror movie. The story and plot are fabulous.
