A film director is in charge of a film's creative and dramatic qualities, visualizing the screenplay (or script) and leading the film crew and performers in carrying out that vision.  So, here are some outstanding Chinese filmmakers.

1. Zhang Yimou

Zhang Yimou is a former cinematographer and Chinese film director, producer, writer, and actor. He is a member of China's 'Fifth Generation' of filmmakers, making his directorial debut with Red Sorghum in 1987.

 

2. Jia Zhangke

Jia Zhangke is a screenwriter and director from China. He is a pivotal character in the Chinese cinema's "Sixth Generation" movement, with Wang Xiaoshuai, Lou Ye, Wang Quan'an, and Zhang Yuan.

 

3. Chen Kaige

Chen Kaige is a Chinese film director and a key role in China's fifth generation of film making. His films are well-known for their visual awe and epic story line.

6. Tian Zhuangzhuang

Tian Zhuangzhuang is a film director, producer, and actor from China. Tian was born to a well-known Chinese actor and actress. Tian began his creative career as an amateur photographer and subsequently as an assistant cinematographer at the Beijing Agricultural Film Studio after serving in the military for a brief time.

 

7. Ning Hao

Ning Hao is a film director from China. Ning attended the Taiyuan Film School and majored in scenic design. He eventually relocated to Peking University's Art Department. Ning finally graduated from the Beijing Film Academy's Photography Department in 2003.

 

8. Wang Xiaoshuai

Wang Xiaoshuai is a Chinese film director, screenwriter, and actor who has appeared in several films. He is generally associated with the informal group of filmmakers known as the "Sixth Generation" of Chinese Cinema.

Jiang Wen is a Chinese screenwriter, director, and actor. As a director, he is sometimes associated with the "Sixth Generation" of the 1990s.

 

10. Zhang Yuan 

Zhang Yuan is a Chinese film director who has been hailed as a pioneering member of China's Sixth Generation of filmmakers by cinema academics. He and his films have garnered ten prizes from seventeen nominations at international film festivals.
