Show Digest

The story is about Ayumu Tanaka, a high school student in his first year. He falls in love with his senior from the Shogi club, i.e. Urushi Yaotome. Ayumu makes a pact to confess his love for Urushi after he defeats her in Shogi. But being a beginner, Ayumu always ends up losing. On the other hand, Urushi tries to make Ayumu confess his feelings but never succeeds.

The Feel-Good Part

The show is fun to watch, with a heartwarming romance and a sweet story. The plot is not deep and is easy to follow, which does not need much investment. The music and animation are satisfactory to a great extent.

The Disappointing Factor

Speaking of disappointments, the show lacks elements of humor and is repetitive. The scenarios are prevalent, and there is not much movement involved. It is a decent rom-com story but does not have any uniqueness.

In-Depth Analysis

Ayumu was the Champion in Kendo during middle school. But when he reached high school, instead of Kendo, he joined the Shogi Club.  The primary purpose behind that was to fall in love with Urushi Yaotome, the Shogi Club president and single member. He was ready to go to any extent to bond with her. However, he decided not to confess his feelings until he beat her in a match. But being a newcomer to that field, it was far from his reach. Besides, he still kept praising Urushi for her looks and skills. As they play together, Ayumu makes his moves for the confession with each round they play.

Star Power

Many call it the superior version of Takagi-san, while others consider it below. Even so, the writer Souichiro Yamamoto did a significant job with the story.

Overall Opinion

Overall, it is a light-hearted, romantic drama that is comforting to watch and does not need a great investment. It can be an excellent muse for all those rom-com fans.
