Movie Digest

This anime series is about a princess who gets abducted by a demon. However, the princess has only one motivation in her life and that is sleep. She realizes ever since being abducted and put in the cell, she has not been able to get a good night’s rest. She wanders daily out of the cell in order to search for materials within the demon castle that will give her a proper rest at night. Although the demon believes he is a bad guy and wants everyone to fear him, he just is not a bad person at all. He allows the princess to roam around the castle despite admonishing her for not behaving like an appropriate prisoner. There is another character, the hero who wants to save the princess from the demon. The princess however hates him and does not mind living with the demon. Eventually the demon decided to protect the princess from any harm whatsoever.

The Feel-Good Part

This is a seasonal anime that surpassed expectations. The premise of its plot had a lot of room for humor and the makers of the show made good use of that. the princess is the heart of the show, quite ruthless if anyone comes in between her and her precious sleep. The humorous elements worked really well for a short 12-episode anime series. The demon was also crafted quite well as a character. He is portrayed along the lines of an antihero. His demeanor changes from abducting the princess to protecting her eventually from all harm. The fantasy setting also gives the viewers to look forward to more. The animation and the story make the show very likable and funny. An utterly inexistant sense of personal safety, and ingenuity is what makes Princess Syalis so endearing to the viewers. We see how she goes to great lengths just to get a good night’s sleep and being abducted by the demon is not going to stop our main character at all.

The Disappointing Factor

There is consistent criticism for anime revolving around the sexualization of characters that look like children and the sleepy princess series is not devoid of it. The character of princess Syalis is quite childlike in appearance and there is a scene where she asks the demon king to massage a pressure point in her back. The show quickly moves on from this gag but nevertheless for people unaware of the sexual innuendos that sometimes accompany anime shows they might get uncomfortable. The series was good in the beginning however fell off in the middle but thankfully picks right back up in the latter part.

In-Depth Analysis

The episodes being a seasonal anime were released one at a time per week. It is suggested to binge it all at once, when the show gets done with the weekly airing. The makers of the show entirely bet everything on princess Syalis and thankfully succeeded in making it work like a charm. The thought process or rather the lack of it was the main point of how Syalis would drum up chaos in the castle. We see the demon and his cleric to give up on monitoring her and admonishing her by letting her do whatever she wished to around the castle.

Star Power

In the sleepy princess series, we have voice actors who achieved quite a lot in the industry and are well established with work in popular anime series. Inori Miyase is the voice actor for our princess Syalis, Miyase has worked in a number of critically acclaimed animes for example Demon slayer, The Quintessential Quintuplets, sword Art Online, Your lie in April, and Made in Abyss, amongst others. The voice actor for our demon in the series has also worked in Demon slayer as Inosuke Hashibara, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Tokyo revengers are some of his prominent works.  Kaito Ishikawa is the one who has voiced the cleric for the demon in this series, the voice actor has previously worked for My hero academia, Haikyuu, One punch man, and world trigger.

Overall Opinion

Sleepy princess earns high for a seasonal anime with a plot that is too juvenile. But the thing that makes it soo good is th anitcs of the princess who is assured that she will take a good night’s rest regardless of what might happen. Such is her need for great rest that she does not even care about being abducted. Her charm is what made the plot work so effortlessly over the span of 12 episodes.
