Subaru returns to Crusch’s manor with Emilia after the battle with the Witch Cult and learns, to his dismay, that everyone has forgotten Rem. The Sin Archbishops of Gluttony, Lye Batenkaitos, and Greed, Regulus Corneus, had earlier ambushed her and Crusch. Despite their heated conflict, Lye ultimately devoured both of them. Crusch lost her memory as a result, and Rem went into a coma, losing her memory and leaving only Subaru to remember her. A distraught Subaru tried to commit suicide after discovering what transpired, intending to travel back in time to stop the ambush. It doesn’t work, though, because the lure has already started when he returns. Subaru subsequently joins Emilia, the amnesic Crusch, Felis, and Wilhelm during a meeting. They have a contentious conversation and ultimately decide to keep working together. Subaru is consoled by Emilia after the meeting as he regrets the loss of Rem. Subaru Natsuki sincerely promises to make it through this timeline and help everyone he can along the way, following Otto Suwen’s severe but powerful speech. Helping Emilia deal with her history is the first step in achieving this aim, although it is more straightforward to say than to achieve. Emilia will find it difficult to trust anyone, even Subaru, her self-described knight because she believes that everyone around her has been deceiving her.
