Drama Digest

Set in the year 1923, a vampire crisis spreads across Tokyo provided by the illegal trade of Ascra that is an artificial blood source. This causes the vampire population to increase rapidly. Colonel Yoshinobu Maeda who is leading the unit is in charge of locating Ascra, killing and capturing vampires is under a lot of pressure to lead with efficiency as the unit is under threat of being decommissioned. The vampires in the unit are struggling to come to terms with their newfound status in the world of the undead, which makes matter worse. The Code Zero unit must fight against their demonic nature and fulfil their mission. The series is an adaptation of a stage play by the same name.

The Feel-Good Part

The setting of the show is strong and distinct, which makes for an immersive viewing experience that adds a lot to the story of the show. The writing is dramatic and filled with references to classic literature, which is engaging to watch. The depiction of vampires is quite unconventional as they are shown as wounded and vulnerable rather that people with super strength. The cinematography and direction is the highlight of the show as it makes the show standout. It uses aspects of visual storytelling incredibly well, which is a delight to watch

The Disappointing Factor

The story is pretty cliché at times. There are a lot of plotholes in the series, which gets frustrating to watch as the episodes go by since it weakens the plot and makes the story confusing to follow. There are many key moments between the characters that happen outside the show, which breaks the flow of the show and causes a disconnect between the audience and the show. It also makes it confusing to watch. The show takes place in two parts; the second part doesn’t follow a fixed episodic structure, which makes the plot feel convoluted.

In-Depth Analysis

The series is a good example of strong visual storytelling and the scope it has to provide an enjoyable time.  The show falters on the writing aspect but more than makes up for it on the visuals.

Star Power

All the performances were excellent. The actors play their respective characters with nuance, which made the audience connect with the characters well. The side characters must be appreciated for their ability to hold the series together in a way that doesn’t overshadow the leads yet provides the audience with a memorable performance.

Overall Opinion

Red Mars definitely falls into the must-watch category quite easily for people who enjoy fantasy characters and classic literature. It falters in very few places that are easy to overlook. Fans of the show should not miss this; it is a novel and entertaining experience that is well executed, making it a rarity. This is  worth your time.
