Can I make your ears happy in 180 seconds? is about a young girl whose passion is making ASMR videos, a whopping trend that took over the internet recently. The show is the first of its kind anime series focused on the world of ASMR, after we got to see the viral sensation all over films and television. Anime follows the story of the protagonist, Gekko Sawaya Gekko also known as Gecko Chan and, who finally buys a dummy head mic in order to pursue her hobby of making ASMR videos. The show goes on to tell us how her hobby inspires her friends to pick up on this trend as well and try their hands on it.
The Feel-Good Part
This show is going to be a treat for the anime lovers who also enjoy good ASMR content. The show is the first to combine these two together to bring the benefits of ASMR described as a feeling of well-being combined with a tingling sensation that runs down the body with animation of anime.
The Disappointing Factor
The main issue here, is that the anime is not really focused on the ASMR but revolves a bit too much around the sexualization of the schoolgirls, the first episode itself hinting on the show’s innately naughty side. The watchers might feel that the show deviates from its core genre at places, prioritising the appeal of the costumes over the art of ASMR. The voice work is not very credible, as at various points, you can just hear the characters plainly talking as opposed to be engaging in actual ASMR.
In-Depth Analysis
The anime is the first ever full series directed by Yoshinobu Kasai. Each episode consists of a ‘heroine’ and experiencing ASMR. The last episode consists of all the girls or the ‘heroines’ coming together and playing their hand at the work of ASMR.
Star Power
Shiori Mikami voices the character of Akari Sawake, the protagonist. She has an amazing voice-work resume, and her soothing voice really brings in the appease of the character she lends her voice too. Other notable personalities who have lend their voices to the making of this show include Aoi Koga, Show Hayami, Kanae Ito and Azumi Waki, who all have excellent credits to their names.
Overall Opinion
This drama presents itself as a great match for anime lovers looking for a short, dinnertime watch with its minuscule 3-minute episodes. Can I make your ears happy in 180 seconds? is exactly what the name promises, an intense auditory stimulation which involves soft talking and clear whispering ASMR experience.
